The Best Watercolour Brush?

Notice anything about this collection of paintbrushes?

They may be all different sizes and brands but they do all have one thing in common: they are round.

Each artist will have their favourite brands so I can’t tell you which one is best. I can only share which brands are my personal favourites. In fact, I’ve got a variety of brands in my collection, from the very affordable to some of the more pricey options. However, I think the best type of watercolour brush, no matter what style, subject or size of painting you are creating, is the round brush.

Brushes come in all shapes and sizes in order to create various lines and marks on the paper. A round or a mop brush is designed in such a way that enables the brush to hold a decent amount of water and come to a fine point.

Depending on your angle and the pressure you use, you will be able to create a wide range of lines and marks with a single brush, from the very thin lines to wider strokes.

If you could only purchase one brush then I would recommend a round, size 6 or 8.

Here is a list of the brushes I have in my collection, pictured above from left to right:

  • Escoda Versátil Sintético, size 2

  • Opus Allegro Round, size 8

  • Escoda Versátil Sintético, size 0

  • Escoda Versátil Sintético, size 4

  • Da Vinci Casaneo Quill Brush, size 4

  • Jackson’s Art Quill Brush, size 10/0

  • Escoda Último Sintético, size 10

  • Da Vinci Casaneo Quill Brush, size 2

  • Jackson’s Art Quill Brush, size 0

  • Princeton Art & Brush Co. 4950R, size 6

Thank you so much for reading! Happy painting!
